The next evolutionary step for Copilot
Microsoft is consistently driving forward the development of Copilot in the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. With Copilot Cowork, Microsoft is now introducing a new function that goes a decisive step further than previous AI assistants. In future, Copilot will no longer just provide answers or create content – it will carry out and coordinate work steps independently. This will fundamentally change the way AI is used in day-to-day work.
From assistant to performer
Up to now, Copilot has mainly provided support for individual tasks: Formulating texts, summarizing information or analyzing data. With Copilot Cowork, the focus is now shifting from pure support to the execution of work.
Instead of just providing an answer, Copilot can take over tasks, create a plan and implement it across various Microsoft 365 applications – for example via Outlook, Teams, Excel or SharePoint. The idea behind it: Intentions become concrete actions.
Delegate work instead of managing individual tasks
The new approach is based on users giving Copilot a task and describing the desired result. Copilot Cowork then creates a work plan that runs in the background. Copilot draws on information from emails, meetings, chats, files and other work data. During execution, Copilot provides information on progress, obtains feedback if necessary and suggests changes – users retain control at all times and can confirm, adjust or pause steps. This creates a new mode of collaboration: people define the goal, Copilot takes over parts of the implementation.
Collaboration across multiple Microsoft 365 apps
A key difference to previous AI functions is the cross-app coordination of work. For example, Copilot Cowork can merge information from Outlook, Teams and documents, create new content from it and use it in other applications. This creates connected workflows in which Copilot not only creates content, but also orchestrates processes between different tools.
Example: Tidy up your calendar and create focus time
A typical scenario is organizing your own week. Copilot Cowork can analyze the Outlook calendar, detect conflicts and identify meetings that offer little added value. Copilot then suggests adjustments – such as rescheduling appointments, canceling meetings or scheduling focus times. Once approved, Copilot implements these changes directly. The result: more focus time and less administrative effort.
Example: Automate meeting preparation
Copilot Cowork can also largely take over the preparation of important meetings. Copilot collects relevant information from emails, files and previous meetings and uses it to create a briefing document, a presentation and supporting analyses. Copilot can also block preparation time in the calendar and prepare a status email for the customer. The team starts the meeting in a much more structured way – without having to spend hours preparing.
Example: Company research in a short time
If information about a company is required, Copilot Cowork can bring together various sources. These include financial reports, analyst commentaries and relevant news. Copilot structures this information and creates a summary with references. In addition to an executive summary, a structured research document or an Excel workbook with relevant data is also created, for example. In this way, a sound basis for decision-making can be created much more quickly.
Example: Creating a launch plan for new products
Product launches often require a lot of information and teams to be coordinated. Copilot Cowork can, for example, create competitive analyses, formulate a positioning and generate a presentation for customer meetings. Copilot can also define milestones, responsibilities and next steps. The result is not just a concept, but a concrete, implementable plan.
Security and governance remain in place
Like all Copilot functions, Copilot Cowork also runs within the existing Microsoft 365 security and governance structures. Access rights, compliance guidelines and identity management continue to apply automatically. All actions remain traceable and auditable. This allows Copilot to perform tasks without circumventing the security requirements of companies.
A new working model with AI
The actual added value of Copilot Cowork lies less in individual functions than in the changed working model. When AI coordinates and executes tasks, the time spent on coordination, administration and rework is reduced. Teams can focus more on what humans are particularly good at: Making decisions, setting priorities and making an impact. Microsoft is therefore talking about a new phase of collaboration with AI – a phase in which Copilot not only provides support, but is actively involved in the implementation of work.
Early access via the Frontier program
Copilot Cowork will initially be made available as part of the Microsoft Frontier Program. Companies that are part of this program will receive early access to new Copilot functions and can test them before the broad rollout. Availability for Frontier members is expected from the end of March.
