A particularly exciting variant of this new world of work is workation – a combination of work and vacation that combines the best of both worlds. Our colleague Jessica Mylius is currently taking advantage of this opportunity in England, and we are gaining valuable insights into how workation can enrich everyday working life.

What is a workation?

The answer lies in the name itself: Work + Vacation = Workation. However, it’s not about occasionally typing on your laptop on the beach under palm trees with a cocktail in your hand – it’s about a conscious combination of work and an environment that inspires. Jessica chose Cambridge, a city full of history and academic atmosphere. While her days consist of video calls, concept work and creative thinking phases, she spends her evenings exploring the city and immersing herself in a new culture. A change of scenery as a productivity booster – not a distraction.

Why a workation can revolutionize work

Workation is more than just a nice place to work – it can have a positive impact on the overall working experience. Here are some of the key benefits:

  • Inspiration through new environments
    Routine can be productive – but it can also be restrictive. A new place can help you clear your head, gain new perspectives and find more creative solutions.
  • The perfect work-life balance
    Instead of going straight from bed to laptop and back to bed again, a workation ensures a better rhythm. Jessica, for example, uses daily walks with her host family’s dogs to get some fresh air and clear her head for new ideas.
  • Motivation and satisfaction increase
    Those who have a say in where they work are more motivated and more passionate about their work. Companies that enable workation show that they trust their employees – and trust is one of the most important factors for long-term employee retention.
  • Cultural exchange and further development
    During a workation, you not only get to know a new city, but also immerse yourself in a different culture. Jessica uses her time to broaden her horizons – both professionally and personally.

But be careful: Workation is not a vacation!

As appealing as the concept sounds, a workation only works if certain challenges are taken into account:

  • Finding the right balance
    Work and leisure must be in balance. If you get too distracted by your surroundings, you will have problems.
  • Technology must be right
    Without stable internet and functioning technical equipment, a workation can quickly turn into a technical disaster. Thorough planning is essential.
  • Be aware of legal and tax aspects
    Workation is not possible everywhere without further ado. Depending on the country and duration, labor law and tax challenges may arise. Clear agreements and clarifications are therefore necessary in advance.
  • Ensure communication
    Just because someone is not in the office does not mean that they should work in isolation. Regular team updates and clear consultation with superiors are essential.

How companies can meaningfully integrate Workation
